Our story: led by Jesus’ love
Our story began in 1968. A group of Christians saw the poverty around the world and chose to act. They answered one call: to live and love like Jesus.
Jesus responded to suffering with action. That’s what drives us today.
It’s why we go to the places where flood waters rise, conflict grows, and crops fail. Where people face hunger, violence and exploitation.
At Tearfund, we are called by Jesus to the places where poverty is at its worst. In the face of extreme suffering, we follow his example of acts of transforming and radical love. Together, we can turn inequality and poverty into lives lived to the full.
Our work
We build long-term partnerships with local churches and organisations who know their communities inside and out.
Every programme is led and informed by the people it serves. Together we tackle:
- Trauma, violence and conflict tearing communities apart
- Hunger, malnutrition and the lack of clean water
- Livelihoods destroyed by climate disasters
- Injustice silencing people’s voices
We don’t just respond to crises. We stay. We support communities to challenge and change the systems that keep people in extreme poverty.
And it takes root. Communities go on to build schools, health centres, water systems and roads. Change that reshapes whole futures.

Transforming communities
As the flood water rose, the Colombian church was ready to respond.
Our Transforming Communities programme ensured that churches were immediately prepared when disaster hit.’
Water, sanitation and hygiene
Risk sexual assault or go without water? Munodei and her children had to make this choice every day for years.
But, thanks to support from Tearfund, they no longer have to. ‘Now we can collect water quickly and come back home early. The children no longer miss their chores or come home when it is already dark.’
Survivor support groups
When Mona’s daughter joined a youth club, our partners saw a mother in need and offered a path to healing.
